The Beatitudes of a Christ Follower: Meek

Blessed are the Meek

Intro:

As we continue to learn about the beatitudes that Jesus taught in Matthew Chapter 5, let us not forget these beatitudes are found in every true citizen of Heaven. They are not only present and abiding, but daily growing greater and greater as we become more and more like Christ.

Blessed are the Meek:

Biblical meekness can be thought of as a God given and abiding humility, or gentleness that is willing to forgo basic rights to pursue peace. Biblical meekness is not weakness, in that you are a pushover or cowardly, but it is an incredible strength and shows itself in the form of self-control. One example of a meek person is Abram (later called Abraham). When a problem arose with Abram and his nephew Lot regarding the grazing rights between them as found in Genesis 13:5-12. The older of the two, Abram, had all the rights to the land which was given to him by God. He could have picked the best grazing land for himself, but to keep the peace with the younger Lot, Abram allowed Lot to choose. This showed great strength in the form of meekness because Abram had all the rights, yet he forfeited them to make peace. The best example, of course, is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” As found in Philippians 2:6-8. Christ in His supremacy had every right to come and dominate every situation, every conversation, and to establish complete rule over the earth that He created, but as you know, He did not, he came to save sinners and in so doing he showed us what meekness and love look like.

Scriptures:

Matthew 5:4KJV
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 11:28-29KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Genesis 13:8KJV

And Abram said unto Lot, let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

Philippians 2:5-8KJV

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Be Encouraged:

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, our Lord Jesus is meek and lowly in heart and we must be imitators of Him. We are not going to inherit the present world system which is full of abuse and decay. The earth that the meek will one day inherit is the New Heavens and New Earth that Christ Himself will reign over in the thousand-year reign of Christ. It is a glorious truth and an unmatched Hope that you can hold onto. Let us be thankful that Christ did not exercise His right to cast us into Hell at our first transgression, but instead He showed meekness and patience toward us while He lovingly invited us to come to Him. The meekness that Jesus teaches is always a fruit of someone who is in constant awareness of the Kingdom of God, so let us focus on our Savior and follow His example closely so that we too may be a meek people.
