Scriptural Proof of Christ’s Deity by His Names

Scriptural Proof of Christ's Deity_by Names

We have been taking a closer look into Christ’s Deity from Scripture. So far, we have seen from Scripture that Jesus performed the works, received the worship, and possessed the same attributes that belong to God alone. It is important to remember that believing in the Deity of Christ is one of the corner stones of the Christian Faith. Those who do not believe and affirm the Deity of Christ are in fact outside of the Christian Faith. This week we look at how Jesus has the same Names that only God has.

This Week:

Names

Scriptures:

Exodus 3:14 (I AM)

And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.

John 8:58-59 (I AM)

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.”

Revelation 1:8 (I AM)

Jesus Said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

John 1:1 (God)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John 1:14 (God)

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

John 1:18 (God)

“No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

John 17:21 (God)

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”

John 10:33 (God)

The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”

John 20:28 (Lord and God)

“And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”

Philippians 2: 5-11 (Lord and God)

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Names:

Throughout Scripture we see how Jesus was called the same names that God the Father was called. Names such as:

1). I AM (Exodus 3:14, John 8:58-59, Revelation 1:8),

2). God (John 1:1, John 1:14, John 1:18, John 17:21, John 10:33),

3). Lord (John 20:28, Philippians 2: 5-11).

Because Jesus referred to Himself as the same Names as God, and He was called the same names that are God’s alone by those around Him, one must conclude from scripture that Jesus was indeed God incarnate.

Be Encouraged:  Brothers and Sisters in Christ, there is a wealth of scriptural confirmation from Christ Himself and those around Him that prove His Deity. A person would have to knowingly and willfully reject the claims of Jesus concerning His Deity to say that Jesus was and is not God. We as Christ followers believe and affirm the Deity of Christ. This is one of the sole reasons that the Jews of the day sought to kill Him. He claimed to be the Son of God and made Himself equal with the God of the Old Testament which they believed they were children of. Christ throughout the New Testament takes upon Himself the same names of the God of the Old Testament. Going as far as to say, “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father” in John 14:9. Let us as Christ followers worship Christ for who He was and is and is to come, I AM, Lord, and God.
