Jesus said, “Come unto Me…” (Part 3 of 4)

Matthew 11.28-30 Part 3 of 4

“for I am meek and lowly in heart”

Scriptures:

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Discussion:

Immediately following Christ’s open offer to come to Him and His command to take His Yoke upon you and learn of Him, He further reveals His heart. He says, “for I am meek and lowly in heart.” When Christ tells us that He is meek and lowly in heart, He is contrasting Himself to that of the Pharisees who were harsh and proud. Christ’s meekness is not weakness, in that, He is a pushover or cowardly, but meekness is incredible strength that shows itself in the form of self-control. The meekness that He speaks of can be thought of as an abiding humility, or gentleness that is willing to forgo basic rights to pursue peace. Due to our sin, Christ has every right to cast us into Hell the moment we sin, but He doesn’t. This is His meekness and love for us on display. Those who take Christ’s yoke upon them will also learn to take the lowest place in humility and to pursue peace whenever possible (Romans 12:18). Christ also says that you will find rest once you take His yoke upon you. This is not necessarily the complete rest from a guilty conscience, although it could be for some, but it is the rest in your heart and the rest that a believer experiences while in service to Christ.

Be Encouraged:

Brothers and Sisters, who among us in this fallen human nature has never tried to be great at something? Perhaps you are known and strive to be the best speller, best driver, best teacher, best worker, best with a computer, etc… Oftentimes once we find something in this life that we are better at than someone else, no matter the complexity, we become prideful and self-absorbed. Confidence is one thing, but always desiring to be an expert or domineering is another. This is not the heart of Christ. He is meek and lowly in heart. He is patient while teaching, loving while disciplining, and slow to anger. Let us be more and more like Him. How many times throughout the day do you give thanks to God for your eye-sight, or a hot meal, or a car to drive? If we are honest, we would say that we can do better. Brothers and Sisters, let us always give thanks to God for His daily mercies in our lives. Not just for the big things, but the small things as well. Let us find rest for our souls under the loving yoke of Christ. Let us find pleasure in submission to His will and daily service to His cause. His mission is still to seek and save the lost. Let us be those who help and labor for Him in any way that we can. If your soul is weary with all of this life’s pressures and responsibilities, come to Christ and shoulder His blood stained yoke and do the work that He has prepared for you to do while you are still here on this earth. That is where you the Christian will find rest for your soul.
