Jesus said, “Come unto Me…” (Part 4 of 4)

Matthew 11.28-30 Part 4 of 4

“My yoke is easy, My burden is light”

Scriptures:

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

1 John 5:3

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”

Matthew 23:4

“For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.”

Discussion:

Our Lord and Savior concludes with the words, “For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light”. This statement is again in contrast to that of the Pharisees teaching. The Pharisees and religious leaders of the day placed heavy yokes on their followers which were impossible for them to bear, such as: religious duties, burdensome rules and qualifications. Jesus on the other hand is showing the people that the yoke He will place on one of His followers is an easy and light one. When Jesus says His burden is light, this does not mean that you will never have trouble in this world (John 16:33), but it does mean that you won’t have to bear it alone.

Be Encouraged:

Brothers and Sisters, how marvelous is the narrow path that leads to life (John 14:6)! We are yoked with the One who will give more than sufficient grace for every time of need we may encounter. To serve Christ should never be burdensome. If you feel a burden when doing something that you think is godly, then you are not truly doing it for Him, but for someone or something else (Romans 12:2). Brothers and Sisters, to serve Him is not bondage, but absolute freedom! He never intended for you, a follower of Him, to bear your burdens alone. If you think that Christ places a single collar upon you when you become a believer in Him you are in error. Christ only places easy and light yokes upon His followers. He says, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light”. He has united Himself in the yoke of this life with you, the born again follower. That is why it is so easy and so light. He is doing all the work. Let us throw off the foolish collar of self and the thinking that we can do things without Him and put on the relaxing yoke of Christ and go where He leads. Brothers and Sisters, never forget this, you will only find true freedom, peace, and joy in this life when you are submitted to the yoke of Christ and learning of Him.
