What is Grace?

What is Grace?

God by His very nature is Gracious. He is a God of all Grace and He freely gives it to all people. Grace is popularly defined as God’s unmerited or unearned favor. It can be broken up into two general types: 1) Common Grace and 2) Saving Grace. Common Grace is experienced by every human regardless of their faith in Him. Graciousness is a part of His unchanging nature; it is an overflow of who He is. He allows unbelievers to experience, for a time, the satisfactions of His Earth such as: having enough food to eat, water to drink, shelter, the joys of parenting, watching His sunset, breathing His air, and living in safety on His Planet. God’s Saving Grace is in terms of salvation, which is only received by faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. God’s Saving Grace saves us from the wrath to come. His Grace reconciles us back to Himself, redeems us from slavery to sin, removes and forgives us our sin, declares us righteous in His sight, and allows us to be a part of His family by adoption.

Key Scriptures:

Romans 3:20-26 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Titus 2:11–15For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds. These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. No one is to disregard you.

Be Encouraged:

Brothers and Sisters, God’s Grace should both flood your heart with thankfulness and love for Him, and also provide the model for how we should treat our neighbor. If it were not for the Grace of God penetrating our sinful hearts, we would not be following Him and we would not be saved. His Grace is Free (to all those who put their faith in Him), His Grace is Eternal (Before time began, God planned to give His Saving Grace to His elect. 2 Tim. 1:9), His Grace does not regard skin color (It circles the globe to all people, Titus 2:11), His Grace is Saving (God’s Grace saves believers from God Himself. Apart from His Grace, mankind can only expect His future judgment and wrath). Brothers and Sisters, we who have experienced the Saving Grace of God must tell others about Him. Talk about His Love for them (John 3:16, Romans 5:8, etc), tell them it is only by His Grace and their faith in Him that they can be Saved and Forgiven.
