Attributes of God: Holiness

Attributes of God: Holiness

Holiness of God:

The Holiness of God is a foreign topic to us as humans who live daily with the fallen nature of our flesh. God’s Holiness is the crown jewel of His character. Above all His attributes stands His unmistakable Holiness. There is none more Holy than God Himself. Holiness is blamelessness, purity, perfection, set apart, worthy, and sacred. At this very moment in Heaven, the angels are saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory”. The repetition can be thought of as: 1st Holy = God is Holy, 2nd Holy = God is Holier, 3rd Holy= God is Holiest. There is no other person in the known universe and no other person in eternity who can come close to the Holiness of our God. The Church as a whole is and has always been the strongest when it recognizes and honors the Holiness of God.

When the Bible calls God holy, it means primarily that God is transcendentally separate. He is so far above and beyond us that He seems almost totally foreign to us.— R.C. Sproul

Scriptures:

Exodus 15:11 “Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?”

1 Samuel 2:2 “ There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.”

1 Peter 1:13-21 “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. 17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.”

Isaiah 6:1-7 “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.”

Be Encouraged:

Brothers and Sisters, Christ came to this Earth and took on the humanity that we struggle with daily, yet He did it without sin. Christ is our substitute for sin. He lived a sinless life; He obeyed all that the law commands. He then died to clear our debt so that we can stand before a Holy God in Heaven with the righteous garments of Christ one day. If you are in Christ, seek Holiness in your mortal bodies. Don’t participate in gratifying the flesh according to the course of this world. Let us be people who honor the name of God by what we watch, listen to, and participate in. Pray that your heart is wounded every time you hear someone take His Holy name in vain. Know that your God is a Holy God and as His children let us seek to model His Holiness in thought, word, and deed. Seek Holiness in all that you do and say. Brothers and Sisters, personal holiness is a work of gradual progress. Let us live each day seeking to become more and more like Christ, who is our model for holiness and truth. Let us be watchful, prayerful, and sober minded during these last days because the enemy of your soul, Satan, is seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8).
