Wrath of God:
Why does a Loving, Patient, and Gentle God also express Wrath? It is because His Wrath is a direct expression of His Holiness. God is not neutral toward sin and wickedness, but will punish all the iniquity that takes place on this Earth. God is righteous in wrath: He loves purity and punishes impurity. God’s Wrath has several characteristics:
1). God’s Wrath is Abiding. It is already hanging over the heads of guilty sinners (Romans 1:18, John 3:36).
2). God’s Wrath is Consequential, this is revealed to us in the principle of sewing and reaping (Galatians 6:7).
3). God’s Wrath is Eternal. All of God’s attributes are eternal because God is eternal. The wrath of God is displayed in an Eternal Hell (Revelation 20:14, Matthew 25:46)
4). God’s Wrath is Redemptive, this is displayed as Jesus bore believers’ sins and suffered on the cross, enduring the Wrath of God, so that believers would never be subject to condemnation (1 John 4:10, 2 Corinthians 5:21).
The only thing that is keeping His Wrath from falling upon the unbelieving sinner is His Mercy towards them. Every soul will either be damned in Hell or will be pardoned in Christ. There are no other alternatives. As Christ Followers we must be willing to tell these hard truths in love to unbelievers. We must not be tempted to water down the Gospel to avoid the attribute of God’s Wrath and His punishment of sin. We must, in love, tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
“There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God; there is hell’s wide gaping mouth open; and you have nothing to stand upon, nor anything to take hold of; there is nothing between you and hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up.” -Jonathan Edwards
Scriptures:
Romans 1:18-20 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse…”
John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
Psalm 7:11 “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”
Acts 17:31 …He hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” (Jesus Christ)
Be Encouraged:
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, remember Romans 8:1-4, “There is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Brothers and Sisters, we who have put our full trust and faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ, will not experience the Wrath of God. Jesus Christ bore the full extent of the Wrath of God on sin and unrighteousness while He hung on the cross. All of the sin that you are capable of including past, present and future has all been paid for by Jesus your Savior. Let us Brothers and Sisters be the first to acknowledge our inability to overcome sin without the help of Jesus Christ and let us daily seek Him and seek repentance. Let us walk a straight and narrow path and remove our foot from evil (Proverbs 4:23-27).
